Hello, everyone! If you're seeing this, it means you signed up for my newsletter at some point in time. Don't worry, I'm not going to flood your inbox. I do like to give you guys regular updates, though. Let's get started!

What Am I Working On?

The Blackbriar Coven: At long last, the first draft of The Blackbriar Coven is done! There were so many starts and stops with this book, but I’m so glad to finally say the first draft is finished. I’m really happy with the way it came out, and can’t wait to get back to work on draft 2. But until then…

Untitled book: I started this book last year. The concept sort of came to me and I got really excited about it and just started writing it. I wrote just under 38,000 words before I realized I should probably focus on finishing The Blackbriar Coven, so I put it away for a while. This past weekend, though, I finally got to pull it out again and read back through what I’d written. I’m still really excited about it and can’t wait to dive in again.

The Witch of Myrwist Wood: I wrote this book as a response to a fairy tale, starting with a short story, which became multiple short stories, which kept growing until I had a whole novel. I’ve put off coming back to it, but it’s finally time to complete draft 3.

What Have I Been Reading?

I recently finished Divining the Leaves by Shveta Thakrar, who is in one of my writing groups.

This was a fun YA book with lovely descriptions. I’ve had her other books on my wishlist for a while, and am considering bumping them up my list.

I only recently discovered that A.G. Slatter’s newest Sourdough book, The Crimson Road, is out. I first read The Path of Thorns in 2023 and absolutely loved it. Since then I’ve read the other novels and one novella set in that world, though I haven’t gotten to the short story collections yet. I’m only a few chapters into The Crimson Road, but I already love it. While you can read the books in any order you like, I would save The Crimson Road for last. Trust me.

What Have I Been Watching?

We’re still working our way through What We Do in the Shadows, though we’re in the final season now. I really love the world and the characters, and it will be sad to leave them behind.

What Have I Been Playing?

I’m still playing Baldo, though I’ve made a lot of progress on it. I haven’t played as much the last few weeks as I’ve focused on finishing The Blackbriar Coven. With so many different drafts to juggle this month (and for the foreseeable future), I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for games. We’ll see.

New Keyboard!

I have a lovely keyboard set up in my main office, but for the past couple weeks I haven’t been working there (my office is in another building on our property). My workspace at home has been fine, but I’ve felt for a while that it could be better. So I finally ordered a computer stand to match the one in my office and a new keyboard so that I can set my laptop on the stand. Now I’ll have (basically) the same setup whether I work from my office or from home. I used the new setup this past weekend and am already in love with this keyboard!

Language Corner

In this section I like to share words from languages I’m learning. I decided on more Irish words this month.

Patreon & Ko-fi

J.H. Fleming's Patreon

I post once a week on Patreon about all sorts of things: writing, books I’m reading, things going on in life. Once a month I also share sneak peeks at whatever book I’m working on. It would mean the world to me if you considered joining.

J.H. Fleming's Ko-fi

I am also on Ko-fi, which is sort of like Patreon, but with one key difference: you’re not locked into a subscription. Ko-fi allows readers to donate however often they’d like to creators they follow. No subscriptions if you don’t want them, no commitments, and you have control over when and how you donate. I don’t post quite as often on Ko-fi, but I’ve been having fun sharing little micro-stories there, if you’re interested.
