The newsletter of fantasy author J.H. Fleming

Hello, everyone! If you're seeing this, it means you signed up for my newsletter at some point in time. Don't worry, I'm not going to flood your inbox. I do like to give you guys regular updates, though. Let's get started!

From our trip to Ireland in 2019

What Am I Working On?

The Blackbriar Coven: We had quite a bit of travel in February, so I didn’t make as much progress on my book as I would’ve liked. However, I came up with a lot of fun new things for the book, including more details on how magic in this world works. Plot details are also coming together in exciting new ways. Because of the new details, I’ve been looping back through the beginning of the book to weave in the extra bits. I’m really happy with how it’s shaping up.

What Have I Been Reading?

I’ve really been enjoying Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis. The premise sounded so fun, and so far I haven’t been disappointed. Description below.

It’s bad enough waking up in a half-destroyed evil wizard’s workshop with no eyebrows, no memories, and no idea how long you have before the Dread Lord Whomever shows up to murder you horribly and then turn your skull into a goblet or something.

It’s a lot worse when you realize that Dread Lord Whomever is…you.

Gav isn’t really sure how he ended up with a castle full of goblins, or why he has a princess locked in a cell. All he can do is play along with his own evil plan in hopes of getting his memories back before he gets himself killed.

But as he realizes that nothing—from the incredibly tasteless cloak adorned with flames to the aforementioned princess—is quite what it seems, Gav must face up to all the things the Dread Lord Gavrax has done. And he’ll have to answer the hardest question of all—who does he want to be?

I’ve also been re-reading Make a Scene by Jordan Rosenfeld. It’s a writing craft book, and so far it’s been fun going back through it.

What Have I Been Watching?

We’re now in season 4 of What We Do in the Shadows. Phill and I are both really enjoying this show: the characters are fun and interesting, and the situations and dialogue are hilarious. Now that we’re back from our travels, I suspect we’ll move through the remaining seasons a little more quickly.

What Have I Been Playing?

I recently learned that The Lord of the Rings Online will be adding some new servers, and it’s looking like my kin will be transferring over to one of them. I haven’t felt like I’ve had the bandwidth to deal with that at the moment (it will involve packing up my house and organizing inventory), so I’ve decided to focus on something else for a little while. I also recently learned that Tales of the Shire has been delayed until July. I didn’t want to start anything new because I want to play that game as soon as it comes out, but since it’s delayed, I’ve started Baldo. It has some Legend of Zelda vibes, but a Studio Ghibli appearance, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it so far.

Superstars Writing Seminar and FenCon

Superstars 2025. Also pictured are Kelly Adams, Rebecca Harris, and Julie Jones.

Our big trip last month was to attend the Superstars Writing Seminar. This is such a blast every year, but I will admit it left me a bit exhausted.

After Superstars, we headed to Dallas, TX for FenCon, a convention Phill has been going to for many years. This was my first year attending as a panelist, which was fun.

While I loved hanging out with old friends and making new ones at both events, I’m glad to be home again and settling back into my routine.

Language Corner

In this section I like to share words from languages I’m learning. I recently started Japanese, so I’ll share more of those words this month.

Patreon & Ko-fi

J.H. Fleming's Patreon

I post once a week on Patreon about all sorts of things: writing, books I’m reading, things going on in life. Once a month I also share sneak peeks at whatever book I’m working on. It would mean the world to me if you considered joining.

J.H. Fleming's Ko-fi

I am also on Ko-fi, which is sort of like Patreon, but with one key difference: you’re not locked into a subscription. Ko-fi allows readers to donate however often they’d like to creators they follow. No subscriptions if you don’t want them, no commitments, and you have control over when and how you donate. I don’t post quite as often on Ko-fi, but I’ve been having fun sharing little micro-stories there, if you’re interested.
