The newsletter of fantasy author J.H. Fleming

Hello, everyone! If you're seeing this, it means you signed up for my newsletter at some point in time. Don't worry, I'm not going to flood your inbox. I do like to give you guys regular updates, though. Let's get started!

Dún Laoghaire

A beautiful day in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, from our trip in 2019.

What Am I Working On?

I’m still typing away on the first Mari book, which I think I might finally have a title for: Witch and Thorn. We’ll see if it sticks, but for now, I like it. I’m slowly creeping up on the halfway point of this one.

I’m also editing a book for my partner, Phillip Drayer Duncan. It’s a massive epic fantasy, which means it’s way bigger than anything he’s done before, and I feel like I’ve been editing it forever. My hope is to finish it by the end of this month, but who knows if that will happen. I’ll get as far as I can.

I also started the next editing draft of my own massive fantasy book, The Myth of Light. Sure, I could’ve waited until I had the others done, but I’ve already been sitting on it for months. Phill was editing this one for a long time, which means I haven’t looked at it myself in probably over a year. It’s more than time to finish up edits and start submitting it. To keep my sanity and manage my time, I’m trying to do a single chapter every day, which is slow progress, but still progress.

All the Murmuring Bones

I recently posted on Patreon about All the Murmuring Bones by A.G. Slatter. It starts like this:

I read The Path of Thorns by A.G. Slatter back in October, and greatly enjoyed it. She's created her own gothic fantasy world she refers to as Sourdough and has set numerous short stories, novellas, and three novels in it so far. All the Murmuring Bones was the first novel she wrote set in this world, but each novel follows a different main character and plot, so they can be read in any order.

Book Description:

Long ago Miren O'Malley's family prospered due to a deal struck with the mer: safety for their ships in return for a child of each generation. But for many years the family have been unable to keep their side of the bargain and have fallen into decline. Miren's grandmother is determined to restore their glory, even at the price of Miren's freedom.

A spellbinding tale of dark family secrets, magic and witches, and creatures of myth and the sea; of strong women and the men who seek to control them.

Prepare Thyself for Merriment!

It’s Ren Faire time!

This past weekend was the opening weekend of the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. I look forward to this every year, and am always happy to connect with old and new friends.

If you’re in the area, find me and say hello! I mostly lurk in The Cave with Music the Gathering. 😂

Future Bestseller Podcast

Some of you may be following my podcast, but if not, consider yourself invited! On Future Bestseller Podcast, we talk about the craft and business of writing and feature various guests.

Currently, we’re on hiatus!

Phill transitioned to being a full-time writer in early April, so his focus has been on finishing his own novel. Once he’s caught up, we’ll decide how we want to move forward with the podcast. Until then, I hope you enjoy listening to our backlog!

Language Corner

I love languages, both learning to speak them and learning how they work. I minored in linguistics in college, and have been studying Irish for about eight years now. While I've also been learning Norwegian and Finnish, I've been focusing more on Irish lately.

Here, I like to share words I've learned in the various languages I'm studying.
