The newsletter of fantasy author J.H. Fleming
Hello, everyone! If you're seeing this, it means you signed up for my newsletter at some point in time. Don't worry, I'm not going to flood your inbox. I do like to give you guys regular updates, though. Let's get started!

What Am I Working On?

Untitled Book: I’ve passed the 30,000-word mark on this one, though I’m not sure I’ll make my original deadline. I’m hoping to make up some of the lost words in the upcoming weeks now that the year is winding down, but we’ll see.
The Blackbriar Coven: Just passed the 11,000-word mark. Ideas for this one have been coming more frequently lately, so I’m thinking to give it my full attention while the inspiration is here.
The Dark House at the Crossing of the Worlds: Still waiting to hear back from beta readers on this one.
The Last Mages of Greybrook: I know, I know, I’ve done nearly a dozen drafts of this one. But I was invited to submit to an editor, so I figure one final polish can’t hurt.
What Have I Been Reading?
I'm still finishing up Naomi Novik’s Scholomance trilogy, but to save room in my luggage during our recent trip, I switched to my e-reader and picked up Clare Edge’s Accidental Demons.
A bit of an explanation: I joined Laini Taylor’s Patreon and Discord groups earlier this year and Laini likes to do book club readings where we all read the same book and invite the author to a Zoom meetup to talk about it. Clare’s already in the group with us and her book was chosen for our November meeting. It’s been a fun read so far, and I just learned Clare is working on a sequel.
What Have I Been Watching?
Phill protested at watching all my usual Halloween movies (Sleepy Hollow, Hocus Pocus, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’ll probably watch them on my own 😁 ), so I came up with alternatives this year. So far we’ve watched the first two Ghostbusters movies, followed by Casper. I’d never seen Ghostbusters, and hadn’t watched Casper since I was a kid, so it’s been a nice changeup.
We also did our annual rewatch of Over the Garden Wall, which was originally a miniseries on Cartoon Network. I think they still air it every year, but we own both the DVD and a digital copy so we can watch it whenever we want. The story follows brothers Greg and Wirt, who are lost in the woods (The Unknown). In the first episode they come across a woodsman who warns them about the Beast who haunts the woods. In each subsequent episode they come across more residents of The Unknown on their quest to find their way home, gaining new friends and learning more about the Beast, who is slowly growing closer. There are only 10 episodes, and each episode is only about 10 minutes long, so the whole thing is about the length of a movie. I highly recommend it.
We also watched Pan’s Labyrinth, which I hadn’t seen in years and Phill had never seen at all. It’s not really a Halloween movie, but I figured it had enough creepy elements that it could pass for one. Plus, it’s just a good movie.
Wildwood Minstrels
We’ve just scheduled some practice dates, so I’m hoping to have more to share soon. Until then, please enjoy our first album on Bandcamp!
Future Bestseller Podcast
On Future Bestseller Podcast, we talk about the craft and business of writing and feature various guests.
We’re still on hiatus, but I’m hoping that will change by the end of the year.
The World Fantasy Convention
Phill and I just got back from the World Fantasy Convention, which was at Niagara Falls this year. We had a blast and got to hang out with so many interesting people. You can read more about it on my Patreon post.
Language Corner
In this section I like to share words from languages I’m learning. This month is more Irish words!
Patreon & Ko-fi
I post once a week on Patreon about all sorts of things: writing, books I’m reading, things going on in life. Once a month I also share sneak peeks at whatever book I’m working on. Now that I’ve started the new book, the next few months will be snippets of that. It would mean the world to me if you considered joining.
I am also on Ko-fi, which is sort of like Patreon, but with one key difference: you’re not locked into a subscription. Ko-fi allows readers to donate however often they’d like to creators they follow. No subscriptions if you don’t want them, no commitments, and you have control over when and how you donate. I don’t post quite as often on Ko-fi, but I’ve been having fun sharing little micro-stories there, if you’re interested.
